Advent Begins in the Dark
Each year the season of Advent reminds us that something is missing; that we still haven’t found what we’re looking for. It may seem odd to emphasize suffering and sorrow for the weeks leading up to Christmas when the world around us puts on its best and brightest. But Advent keeps us honest. In spite of all the tinsel and cheer, the gallantry and gifting, the mulled wine and endless trays of cookies, the world is not the place it’s supposed to be.
Somehow, I find comfort in that honesty. The Christmas season—with its short days, fraught family events, and year end reminders of unmet longings—can be the hardest time of the year for many of us. Advent reminds us that the world we live in really does need saving, and someday, the Savior will come again just as he promised.
Here is a brief audio Advent guide to help you practice the season of Advent. Advent guides abound, so I’ll tell you why you should use this one. First, it’s centered on daily scripture reading and contemplative prayer, which means you get to sit with God’s Word rather than someone else’s meditation (those guides are of course helpful as well at times). It also invites you to participate rather than just listen. Second, this guide is in a podcast format, so you can listen to it anytime you have 10 minutes alone. It’s perfect for morning commutes or routines. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts. I hope it’s helpful to you.
If you are struggling this holiday season, don’t wait to reach out to Good Shepherd Soul Care or someone else. I have limited immediate availability for December and January. Choose a time below to book a free Discovery Meeting.
